A queer library and archive, where you can research queer literature and history and loan some of the books.
The archive includes, on top of books, also materials such as zines, journals and documentation by historical queer activists. Some CDs and VHS tapes are also available for use on premises.
Outside library/archive operating hours, meetups, events and consultations take place at the space (see website)
There is a kitchenette where visitors can make a cup of tea.
Overhead flourescent lighting can be found in all spaces.
In the reading corner of the entrance all there is a soft ceiling-facing light.
In the archive room there are four standing lamps with warm but visible light sources.
Feel free to ask to change the lighting to suit your needs. Staff is accommodating.
A few researchers may use the archive room simultaneously.
With closed windows the library and archive as mostly quiet. Staff may speak in hushed voices in the open-scheme office.
When windows are open for ventilation and on hot days, there are two main sources of considerable noise from the back yard:
- A kindergarten with a playground operating till 16:00. The during pick-up time, noise can emanate from both sides of the building.
- A restaurant with beer garden that operates from 12:00-14:00 and then again from 18:00
The smell of old print material.
Walk through the first and second yards. The building is at the back of the second yard with a blue metal door, which is usually open. You can try to push it before ringing the intercom.
There is an elevator and a ramp and be added to the library door to facilitate the entrance of mobility aides.
To visit the library for research purposes it is best to email the staff in advance, and explain what the research is about. You can also check out the partial materials catalogue on the website beforehand, giving staff a chance to find further related material before your visit.
Archive materials, as well as VHS and CDs can only be used on premises.
Books from the entrance hall can be loaned by library members. Membership is 10 Euros a year (not included in the Berlin Stadtbibliotheken subscription). Books can be loaned for 4 weeks at a time.
