prepped.to is a business directory and map created by and for the autistic community to give folks sensory information and instructions on how to get service in different businesses and locations. This way, we can be informed before our visit, decide which location caters best for our needs, bring protective gear, and plan our visit accordingly.
Creating native apps is extremely programmer-intensive and we currently can’t afford it. It is also a drain on your smartphone’s resources. That is why prepped.to is currently browser-only, and is designed mobile-first. So to have it on the go, just open it in your favourite mobile browser.
Find the location you are planning to visit by searching its name, or find it on the map. Alternatively, you can browse the business directory to find businesses in a specific category and/or area, or according to a specific keyword search.
In the location detail page you can find a video tour and sound sample of the location, as well as text and images regarding its lighting, noise levels, human load, smells and smoke, how to find it once you’ve reached the address, how to get service there and what the toilet situation is like. Not all locations have all the details, depending on what information was added by the user who uploaded the location.
At the end of each location there is a feedback form. Feel free to add clear, informative and factual feedback, and upload any missing media. We will review your feedback and media, and add it to the listing as needed.
Are you the owner of the location? In this case, tick the relevant box in the feedback form.
Because prepped.to is login-free, please send us your corrections via the feedback form at the end of each location. Please note that typos and grammatical errors will be edited out before publishing your location, so you don’t have to worry about those.
Thank you for making our offer grow!
To add a location:
- Click the “Add Location” button at the top of the screen,
- Search for your location on the map
- Confirm that this is the location you were looking for by clicking the button
- Copy and paste location name, address and coordinates (latitude and longitude) to the appropriate fields in the form, to make sure they are accurate.
- Fill the rest of the form and upload the media.
Please make sure to stick to facts, instead of opinions. For example: don’t write “it’s too bright”, but rather describe the available lighting and upload images.
Please make sure to ask for permission before taking pictures, videos or sound recordings in private properties or of people’s faces. If your media contains faces of people whom you could not ask for permission, make sure to blur them.
To make the information more accessible, it is best to also create a video tour of the location. However, done is best: it’s better to add a location with missing information or media than not to add the location at all.
Because prepped.to is first and foremost a tool for and from the autistic community, we only accept location descriptions added by autistic people, or people who are in the process of their autistic discovery.
But don’t worry, we don’t collect your personal details, so as long as you keep such details out of your location listing, nobody will know who you are.
No. Self-identified and community-diagnosed autistic people can add a location too.
You can only add a location if you are autistic yourself. However, you can add a location on behalf of an autistic person who can’t type, as long as you add the information they tell you to add, not what you think they might want to add.
Because prepped.to is first and foremost a tool for and from the autistic community, we would like to know the autistic status of feedback givers.
But don’t worry, we don’t collect your personal details, so as long as you keep such details out of your listing or feedback form, nobody will know who you are.
Aut2Aut, the nonprofit that runs prepped.to, is taking its first steps, and would like to avoid the risk and complexity related to keeping a database full of users’ personal data. In the future, when we can hire a data security expert, we might enable such features.
In the meantime, you can safely add your name/nickname and email to a feedback form. If there is anything else you would like to tell us using your own name and email, please feel free to contact us at contact[at]aut2aut.org
Whether you know it or not, you already have autistic visitors. This website just helps them prepare better before visiting your business and makes it more likely they will have a successful visit. This is already a great accommodation!
If for any other reason, you would like videos or images of your place to be removed from the platform, please email us at and we will remove them as soon as possible.
However, please note that we are under no obligation to remove any textual description of your place, as long as they are not defamatory, and media such as images and videos simply make preparing to visit your business more accessible to people who cannot or don’t want to read long texts.
If this is a location you are planning to visit or are already familiar with, and you are autistic, please consider adding it yourself!
prepped.to is only as good as the locations community members add to it. Please remember, nobody is going to judge you or the information you provide. We will proofread it before publishing, so perfect spelling and grammar are not required.
If you cannot add this location, for whatever reason, please feel free to email us at contact[at]aut2aut.org and we will try to find a way to add it.
Thank you for caring!

You don’t need permission to write textual descriptions or to document outdoors or public locations.
If you want to add media, such as images and videos of a private location that you don’t own, it is best to ask for permission first.
You can either ask once you are already on location, or you can email, message or call in advance, to make sure you get a reply from someone authorized to give such permissions.
Here are examples of such communications:
What to say if you’re already there
Approach a staff member in a moment when they don’t seem too busy or emotional, and say something like:
"Hi, my name is [Your Name]. I use a platform called prepped.to, and I noticed this place isn’t on there.
It’s a free directory that helps autistic people know what sensory environment to expect and how to get service in a location, before they visit.
Would it be alright if I took a few pictures and videos of your space to create a listing? It's completely free of charge and would be super helpful.
If they say yes, say:
Thank you! I’ll just walk around and take pictures and videos. I’ll blare people’s faces before I upload this.
After you’re done, if the person you spoke to isn’t too busy, you can say:
All done, thank you so much! You'll be able to see the listing and provide feedback once it’s online.
If they say no:
I get it, that’s okay. Thank you anyway and have a nice day!
If they say they don’t have authority to permit this, you can ask to speak to someone who does.
If they are not on premises, you can say:
Oh, I see. I’ll email or message them then. What’s the best way to contact them?
Email template:
Subject: Permission to Document Your Location for prepped.to
Dear [location] Team,
My name is [Your Name], and I am a user of the platform prepped.to. I noticed your [business type] is not currently on the platform, and I would like to add it. This will be free of charge for both of us.
What is prepped.to?
prepped.to is a nonprofit directory that provides descriptions of public spaces and businesses, created by and for autistic people. The platform helps users get important details before visiting a location through text and supporting media, such as:
- How to get service (e.g., "order at the counter," "card only")
- Sensory conditions (lighting, noise levels, smells, human load)
- Other helpful information (e.g., "located in the second floor on the left," "restrooms downstairs to the right")
Having this information beforehand is extremely valuable for autistic folks. It allows for proper preparation, reduces anxiety before going out, and contributes to a more pleasant and successful visit.
Why am I contacting you?
I believe your [Business Type], [Business Name], would be a valuable addition to the prepped.to directory. I would like to request your permission to document the location to create a helpful entry.
For this, I would kindly ask for:
- Permission for a documentation visit (approximately 30 minutes) to independently take photos and short videos.
- Alternatively, if you prefer and it's possible, your support would be greatly appreciated through:
-- A short explanation of your processes (in writing or via a short video)
-- Providing photos/videos of the premises (especially focusing on lighting, service areas, and general layout)
--A short audio sample of typical background noise
What you get out of this:
✅ Visibility on an innovative platform focused on accessibility, completely free of charge.
✅ You contribute to inclusion and participation for autistic people.
Next Steps:
If you are okay with me documenting your business, please reply to this email, stating that, as well as any restrictions that might apply. In case you want to be present during my visit, please let me know of 2-3 possible dates/times [add your scheduling preferences].
Thank you for considering this.
Together we can help make our community more accessible!
Best regards,
[Your Name]
