A museum presenting Tove Jansson's (the creator of the Moomins) drawings from the Moomin books as well as miniatures based on the books built by her life partner Tuulikki Pietilä. There are some other Moomin related things as well. There is also a crafting workshop inside the museum, a gift shop and a Moomin book reading corner in the lobby.
In the lobby there are small lights embedded in the ceiling, and long stripes of colorful lights on both sides of the hallway ceiling. The ceiling in the hallway is made of a mirror-like reflective material and it reflects the lights downwards.
For the most part the lighting in the museum is dim. The walls, floor and ceiling are mostly dark and don't reflect light, and there are spotlights directed towards the exhibits. It's possible that the spotlights might shine into your eyes at certain angles. There are also some videos projected onto the walls and they bring some light to the space. In the workshop room it's brighter, there are neutral toned lights in the ceiling.
There can be varying amount of people at different times, but even during a busy time there is enough space so that you're unlikely to bump into people. You might have to wait a moment to look at an exhibit when it's busy, but otherwise there is space to move around.
There are people talking and sometimes children sounds. Some exhibits have a button you can press to hear a story, but they don't play all the time, only for some time when someone pressed the button. There are some videos with sounds playing nonstop but the volume is adjusted so that you mostly hear it when you are quite close to the exhibit.
When you enter the building there is a gift shop immediately on the left side and after that the ticket counters. To buy a ticket you need to walk straight ahead until you see a blue sign on the wall on your right side that says "Tickets, start here". The sign points down to a screen where you can get a queue number for the ticket counter. Press "Moomin museum", take your queue number and look to your left where the counters are. There is a screen that will show your queue number and tell you which counter you should go to. It's likely that the queue is not long and you're done with buying the tickets within a few minutes.
After that you can keep walking down the lobby and soon there will be lockers and coat racks where you can leave your outdoor clothes and backpack. You can only bring a small bag inside the museum. The instructions for using the lockers are on the locker doors. You don't need coins for the lockers. You can either use a pin code or a card suitable for contactless payments. Using the card doesn't cost any money, it's just for closing and opening the locker.
When you walk a little further down the lobby, there will be a Moomin book reading corner on the left side where you can sit down and read the books in a lot of different languages.
On the right side you can find the entrance to the museum. You need to show your ticket to enter. Inside the museum you can walk around as you want, there is no specific route you need to take. The museum has two floors.
All exhibits have descriptions at least in Finnish, Swedish and English, but many also in Russian, Japanese and simplified Finnish.
There is a craft workshop downstairs in the museum which is open from 12 to 16 every day when the museum is open. What you can make there changes from time to time but there will be written instructions and also a person helping. Going to the workshop doesn't cost extra.
There is one wheelchair accessible toilet located on the opposite side of the ticket counters in the lobby. Close to that there is a door to more toilets. The toilets are for all genders. There are many stalls next to each other but they are built like little rooms, without any gap on the bottom. There is a sink in most of the stalls and there are more sinks close to the door. There is a similar set of all gender toilets after the lockers.
